play the dutch against it and most players will freeze because of it its a good opening but against an open with the same idea of suceding the center to the oppenent its not so good

i play the english quite often and i enjoy the success i have with it. its true that its like a reversed siclilian in the way that it challenges black to gambit for control of the center by battling a wing pawn against one of black's center pawns. throw in the fast developement of your pieces with an open file to stack your rooks and what's not to like or even love about the mighty english open!!!!!

great opening with the white. safer for the royals than the usually played d4.. e4.. and allowing a quick development and easy castle as well.

it's a gambit opening, pretty good I think, later is d4, there is still lots of options. queen pawn opening, accepted or declined.

Theres nothing wrong with this opening. I have played it a few times and played against it a few times too. similar concept in some ways to the siclilian i rekon even with the squares your trying to control. Over-all a good solid opening. But an opening u need to know how to play positional chess to be most effective with it...Cool

I kind of agree -I've only just started using it but you can end up with quite a nice situation for white...   I'm quite surprised that the stats for it are so bad.  If it continues with e5 you get an interesting reversed Sicilian with white having an extra tempo.
