This is played by beginners who think they will develop the rook next move, but the game continues 1...e5 2.Ra3 Bxa3.

1. a4 isn't the WORST move, 1. h4 IS.

BUT, Waren Opening isn't recommend. ONLY IF YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE DOIN'!

This leads to reversed openings, but I believe 1.a3 is a better way to do that, because in some lines (like the Ruy Lopez reversed) 1.a4 is too commital and not being able to respond to ...Bb4 with a3 leaves White with fewer options than Black has in the real Ruy Lopez. For some analysis and a couple games in this line, see:

I don't have the experience to say this is a horrible opening, but most of the games in the database that white uses this opening either end in a draw, or loss.

This opening is known as the Celestial Advance.  If done corrrectly, no one can defend.  It sets up a very interesting flank attack about 20-30 moves down.  I wouldn't expect a high school student to understand the complexities of such a pioneering opening, so ignore comment below.  If you like the challenge of playing black, some of the same mentality goes into the early play, but eventually that first pawn will play a key role in the development of your attack.
