I think Obama is the BEST thing that has happened to America in recent memory. Particularly after our last president, whom I was embarrassed to listen to, it is wonderful to have a president so intelligent, who can put complex sentences together smoothly and correctly and who is always reaching out in an attempt to reach consensus. I couldn't care less what religion he is, or what his skin color, he is a hero in my eyes. I feel so bad about the absolute MESS the stepped into upon becoming our president, but I think he is doing an OUTSTANDING job.

Bill:

Do you or the owners of this site have any interest in checking into the flack over the behavior bryanb (Bryan Bulmer) on the Open Forum?

He is way out of bounds on it, and has ruined it for the people who are trying to use it for its intended purpose.  I am officially asking that he be blocked from the Open Forum altogther, as he constantly posts in every topic with irrelevant commentary and proceeds to make the discussion in every forum topic about him.

In regard to adambarko,  Despite being called anti-science. actually I am a fan of science.  It seems like everyday a new science breakthrough happens that points to God.  For example, It is estimated that there are about 5*10 to the 21st power stars in the universe (I am relying on my memory, but the point is their are a lot of them).  Yet that is not near enough to overcome the odds that a planet contains life (sorry, but there is not life elsewhere in the universe).  Here is why I believe so:

91% of the stars are in globular galaxies, there is little no new star formation in these galaxies (Life requires a third generation star so the star is heavy enough).

Life requires a bachelor star (not binary)

Cannot be located anywhere near the center of a galaxy, not too far from the edge

Galaxy must be located in the outskirts of the Local Group

Sun must be formed from ashes of both a Type 1 and Type 2 supernova and have elements that only come from nearby binary white dwarfs

Planet must be in the habital zone in all parts of orbit (So water can be in 3 states)

Planet must have a large moon (Our perfectly sized moon is unusually large and formed by an unusual collision, not naturally)

I can go on, but there is much more impressive reasons to believe in God.  Within a moment after the Big Bang occurred all of the physics constants were established.  If the Ratio of electromagnetic force constant to gravitational force constant was not with 1 % of what it was, life woyuld not be possible (either all mass would quickly form into a black hole or the molecules would be scattered about throughout the universe never forming matter).

There are many others like the decay rate for beryllium-8 and the ratio of neutron mass to proton mass, but you get the idea.
I suspect that adambarko call me anti-science because he assummed I was a YEC (Young Earth Creationist).  Actually, I am an Old Earth Creationist.  I can defend that too, but that is beyond the scope of this post.
When people of honor disagree that invites good debate and discussion that we can all grow from.  However, when people write "Opiejames is like so many other anti-scientists and anti-intellectuals, who have their minds made up before they search for or consider the evidence." without even asking if I "had searced for or considered the evidence" on my position it does irk me.  Nevertheless, I've started to make my position known and welcome honorable and respectful disagreement.
Sorry for the long post, but I did cut out a lot.  I will try to be shorter next time.

How can a logical person be an athiest when the Cambrian Explosion (look it up in a non-religious web page) so obviously points to creation, not evolution?

Just by reading the Wikipedia article on the Cambrian Explosion, one can see that there are several hypotheses about how this apparent rapid profusion of complex animals came about.  So it's a scientific issue.  Because science doesn't have a confirmed explanation doesn't make any stronger case for the existence of a Creator.  Opiejames' statement is just like the reaction of the Catholic Church hierarchy's reaction to Galileo's discovery of moons of Jupiter -- "How can a person believe there are moons orbiting Jupiter when it is so obvious that Earth is the center of the universe?"

Opiejames is like so many other anti-scientists and anti-intellectuals, who have their minds made up before they search for or consider the evidence.

Superstition is a deep-seated characteristic of the human species.  Will we ever outgrow it?

By the Grace of God

Ruy Lopez and Damiano were strong figures in the Church.

And why are Kings traditionally made with crosses on the top?

The game has been preserved and played for a centuries by the Muslims.
Incidentally,
(I doubt this has anything to do with Muslim interest in Chess, but)
look at this flag of the Almohades:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Almohad_Dynasty.svg
(I tried to post it but couldn't upload.)

And so many Israelites (although not religious ones)
have made there claim to fame through the game.

And the game is strongly held to have first originated in India.

Is this just because Chess teaches us about being rational,
or is there something more profound?

Does the game say anything about religion?

Hi all!

Just found you and would like to join in, if any of you find what I say offensive chat to me about it, I am always open to reasoned argument.

I do have a couple of comments on what I have read so far, the first is to do with the first comment about guns. John Sixkiller says some countries with loose gun laws have low crime rates. I would like him to name 1 country that has high gun ownership and low gun crime.

The second comment is about the new US president, he is not black! His mother is/was Irish, the idea that he has discarded half his heritage just so that he and the democrats can claim another first is disgusting and far from being a move away from racism by claiming to be a colour he has and is doing a disservice to a large section of the US population who should all be ditching the African/American thing in favour of the AMERICAN AMERICAN thing.

There are some nations with loose gun laws that have low crime, but most low crime nations have tight gun laws. I'm not keen on guns, but its not like I would legislate that people not be allowed to ski simply because it is dangerous. Since when did USA become the home of the SAFE? Too much safety can choke the life out of a people.

Note that referencing the cambrian explosion also suggests that you don't beleive that the world was created a short 6 thousand years ago since the rock record, genetics, carbon/uranium dating, ect suggests more than 1/2 a billion years.
