Nakamura To Play Corus 2010

Submitted by SonofPearl on Tue, 06/23/2009 at 1:53pm.

Following on from his win in the US Chess Championships in St. Louis, Hikaru Nakamura (pictured) has landed an invite to one of the world's most prestigious tournaments.

Nakamura will be playing with the world's elite in the 'A' Group at the Corus Tournament in Wijk Aan Zee in the Netherlands next year (15-30 January).

Other invites will be made over the next few months, so we will have to wait for the full line-up, but it will very interesting to see how Nakamura fares with the very best in the world.

Who would YOU most like to see him take on?  Anand, Topalov, Carlsen, Ivanchuk?

Here is the last round win which gave Nakamura the US Championship title.

Considering that Nakamura's second is only a 2200'ish player, I have serious doubts about the quality of his home preparation as well as his opening repertoire in general.  The man has the worst opening repertoire of any GM I've ever seen and yet it hasn't stopped him from from reaching the Super GM level.  Obviously, the talent is there but until he overhauls his opening strategy, I doubt he'll ever be able to consistently compete with the best in the world.  Corus might be a wake up call....

If he drops the "Entourage" method of hiring seconds he might be one of the best in the world.

I will be pulling for Nakamura, to be sure.  I am most looking forward to his playing Magnus.  I also hope Judit is invited again.

@PhilipN: The Corus tournament used to be called the Hoogovens tournament (but Hoogovens was taken over by Corus). The first edition was in 1938.

See http://www.coruschess.com/tournament.php for the history.

Has he faced Magnus?

quick search of chessbase shows they met in 2005 in Biel, both games a draw.

I don't know, guys... everyone's saying Naka can't stand up to that kind of competition, but remember--he beat Kamsky (who made it to the middle of the board last January) in the US championship tournament (although that was more a contest between Kamsky and Nakamura over which one could make fewer draws against weaker players).  I'm saying he's got a chance for some points (although it sure doesn't look like he's in the same league as Ivanchuk, Anand, and Carlsen)-we didn't expect him to beat Kamsky in St. Louis!

I'm just waiting to see whether Kamsky gets invited to Corus again-How long has it been since there were 2 Americans in the Corus tournament?  (Come to think of it, how long has the Corus tournament been around?  I only started following chess a little over a year ago.)

Nakamura is a genius.  Watching him compete, you just know he has a 'feel' for the game that no one else has... that partially explains why he can create such messy complications and work everything out so logically.  His preparation and work eithic may come to the forefront at this tournament though... and although any 2700+ does well in this regards, we really don't know how his home cooking tastes quite yet :).

Nakamura chess quality is undeniable.Afterall he is above 2700.But in a tournament that will probably field the likes of Carlsen, Kramnik, Topalov,Anand..i guess Nakamura won t have much chances, but will see.

Let's give him a chance... anyway he earns it... but I also think he will not be able to do well against top GMs like Anand and Carlsen... Nakamura badly needs some luck.Cool

Though I must give props to him for saying there are only there great players in the us...Onishchkuk, himselk. and Kamsky of course...then in the next round he just raped Akopian...so I will wait and see if he finishes last which is better than Akopian would have done.

WHHHAAAT???? How in the world does a grandmaster BLUNDER HIS QUEEN LIKE THAT with 21. Rxd4? I mean, it's not that it's dumb or anything, but this is a GM we're talking about? This is a mistake someone like 1700 FIDE would make but not 2500+!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, playing against a Super GM is probably very stressful, especially when you sac a pawn for a not-so-useful tempo boost after 11 turns, but c'mon!!!!!!

Excellent. My favorite tournament.

"Who would YOU most like to see him take on?  Anand, Topalov, Carlsen, Ivanchuk?"

Out of those you listed, Carlsen.

I hope he prepares well.
