Dortmund Tournament 2009

Submitted by SonofPearl on Wed, 07/01/2009 at 11:58am.

The traditional chess super-tournament in Dortmund, Germany takes place from 2-12 July.

This 37th edition of the tournament is a very strong double round robin featuring Magnus Carlsen (pictured) as the top seed.

 Magnus Carlsen (NOR)
 2772
 Dmitry Jakovenko (RUS)
 2760
 Vladimir Kramnik (RUS)
 2759
 Peter Leko (HUN)
 2756
 Etienne Bacrot (FRA)
 2721
 Arkadij Naiditch (GER)
 2700

Carlsen may be top seed, but Dortmund is definitely one of Kramnik's favourite events, having been the winner a staggering eight times before.  He will also have the added incentive this year of trying to beat Dmitry Jakovenko, who pipped him to the world no. 5 spot on the latest official FIDE ranking list.

Peter Leko is always hard to beat, and is the reigning Dortmund champion.  Etienne Bacrot will be hoping to make the most of his opportunity in this high-profile event, which he qualified to play in by winning the huge Aeroflot Open earlier this year.

Local fans will be cheering on the German no.1 Arkadij Naiditch who is the lowest ranked competitor at a mere 2700 Elo!!!

I'm in Göttingen right now... can I just show up to watch the tournament on the weekend, or is there some kind of reservation or entrance fee required?

I'm only taking part in the open, but I'm gonna try to get my "Wonderboy"-booked signed  by Magnus. I hope that this 'll be possible, at last he's my idol  :x

It's good for Germany that they can finally include a German in the field without dropping the average elo too much. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about Corus and the Dutch GMs...

A lowly 2700. If I were him I'd just play some games on live chess here on site and hope I don't lose too often. Def. not the rating to take toa real tournament...
