Bazna 'Kings' Tournament

Submitted by SonofPearl on Thu, 06/18/2009 at 1:54am.

The latest chess super-tournament is currently taking place in Bazna, Romania.

This is the third edition of the tournament, and the format has changed to a double round-robin featuring six strong Grandmasters, including local star Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (pictured).

After four rounds, the standings are:

Ivanchuk, Vassily   UKR   2746
Shirov, Alexei  ESP  2745
Gelfand, Boris  ISR  2733
Radjabov, Teimour  AZE  2756 2
Kamsky, Gata  USA  2720
Nisipeanu, Liviu-Dieter  ROU  2675 1

The official site can be found here, where you can find player biographies, interviews, pictures, reports and live games.  All games start at 15:30 local time, except the last round which starts at 13:30.

The time control is 120 minutes for the first forty moves, 60 minutes for the next twenty moves and then 15 minutes and an increment of 30 seconds per move.   The tournament finishes on 25 June.

The decisive games so far are shown below.  It's nice to see Shirov and Ivanchuk playing well after their recent disappointing tournament results.  They slugged it out in an entertaining draw in round two.

very interesting game between Gelfand and Nisipeanu. Something was wrong in Nisipeanu"s game calculations finally.

Could someone explain the benefits of Ivanchuk's 10..0-0-0 in his game against Shirov? The queenside seems decimated in comparison to the kingside.

Is it because he would need two extra moves in order to clear his KS and he just wanted his king away from the centre?
