Tales From the Open

Submitted by benws on Wed, 11/26/2008 at 6:29am.

As I already have mentioned before, i had some limited success at the nc open earlier this month. It was very interesting, as despite the low turnout, lots of interesting people attended (including one unnamed staff member of chess.com). Highlights included a Halloween costume contest and touch-move disputes. The chess was also great (unfortunately for me Frown). I was subjected to the run of my life, a real marathon of a tournament. Yet, i hung on and (barely) finished.

Anyway, my first round game was especially dramatic. We played game 30/90, and my opponent didn't show up, so i made my move and started his clock. And i waited...for about 40 minutes! Then he finally came, looked at the board, and played one move. Motioning to me to wait (after i moved), he then left again. And so i waited...for about 20 more minutes. Then finally, he showed up again, and thankfully it was for real this time (though he did leave for a couple of minutes to get a notation sheet). And so, with 30 minutes on his clock, we sat down to play...

(NOTE: THIS GAME IS FOR CONCEPTUAL PURPOSES ONLY).

Good game, entertaining and double edged play. Perhaps 8... Qa5 or 8... d6  instead of O-O would have been a better choice, but I don't play the Sicilian so I don't really understand the dynamics. I do know that the Black Queen on a5 usually forms a battery with the b4 bishop in many variations, which is the main reason I never play the Sicilian, life's too short and Sicilian theory is far too long.

Black was a bit complacent in letting white do a pawn storm like that, it's one of the key concepts of the sicillian, especially when white castles queenside.

"This game is for conceptual purposes only". What does that mean?

Nice game, though.

He has said it now! There were no notes at all when I posted my comments.

It's better to 'save and preview' an article rather than 'submit' it in little bits then editing it along the way - I'll play through the game now that there are notes to it.

Cheers Smile

He said that was the finish - Black lost on time.

Nice pressure that you kept on his position.  I enjoyed the game.

Are you going to finish this later? Maybe give some notes (and a result!) to the game??
