Sicilian Theory Overestimated?

Submitted by Patzer24 on Mon, 11/17/2008 at 12:50pm.

Here is a game from the 38th Chess Olympiad, WIM Paulet - WIM Gerasimova with full annotations and commentary:

This game is a good example of how to avoid the opening knowledge of your opponent. In this game white plays a quiet line against the Sicilian to avoid all of the dangerous opening theory in the Sicilian. Eventually white was able to build up a kingside attack which ended quickly and decisively. So this game brings up the question: Is Sicilian opening theory overestimated? Why not play in the same fashion white did here to combat one of the most challenging openings against 1. e4

I agree joelabees . It looked like a game between 2 mates.  Just like the Mcshosting dude said, why would you run away when you're in a clean attack?   And then white failed to take the advantage it gained, and eveything turned into a drawnout game with few definitive strikes.

Was a good game still.  Just wouuldn't have thought "GAME OF THE WEEK".

Who chooses  GAME OF THE WEEK anyway?  Out of members' live games?  Cool!

Zenchess asked, "Can someone tell me what white would do after : 8...Nxe2 9. Qxe2 Be7 with the eventual plan for black of playing d5 and shutting down white's bishop with c4.  This is a very strong plan in the grand prix attack and it looks to me like white is worse in this line." After 9...Be7 10.e5 looks better for White, so 9...d6 should be played.
