Confronting the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit

Submitted by FM FM_Eric_Schiller on Fri, 06/05/2009 at 2:13pm.

The Blackmar-Diemer Gambit (1.d4 d5 2.e4) can be a bit scary. White generally gets a strong attack in the main line. In this article, I explore a more confrontational approach. After 2...dxe4 3.Nc3, Black can play the opening blast 3...e5!? and obtain an intersting position with good winning chances.

Note: Most of the analysis is in the extensive notes, so make sure you click the Move List button to see them. Otherwise you'll just see one line.

@ amitprabhale, you can castle and GIVE  check, but you cannot Castle OUT of Check.

1. d4 d5 2. e4 c6 transposes to the caro-kann

EDIT: That is the line that I use because I play the caro-kann against e4

@farbror:

It was here, wasn't it? The page index is here, but it is in Czech language.

Very informative, I attempt to play the BDG religiously in almost every game I play as white when playing quick or blitz games.

I found some interesting analysis of the 4. Nge2-line on the net. It is lightly "unBDGesque" but white might squeeze out a tiny edge.

I will try to find the link to the site again.

I agree that ...e5 is tough to play as White--to the poster about castling--you can not castle while you are in check but you can castle to give check--big difference
